Since I have spent most of this past week working on my Class project, I haven't given this piece a lot of time. Still, I have made some decent progress on the background. The initial color of the background was a much brighter hue of brown than the wood in the actual photo is; honestly, the drawing didn't look like wood at all. But, putting that base color onto the paper helped me cope with the whole "white canvas syndrome" -- it might not have been a very good starting place, but it was at least a start. So, I spent some time adding some army green and dark browns to de-saturate the background and give it a wood grain texture. I used my fingers and Q-tips to smudge and blend the colors. I will definitely have to work on the lizard itself some more because the colors have gotten a little fuzzy as the surface collects bits of other colors; I'll need to go back through and brighten everything up -- especially the yellow line on left side of the lizard. I also need to add some texture to convey the scaly lizard skin. I've been avoiding this because I know it will feel tedious to add subtle hints of gray and white, but I know it's necessary to creating a realistic drawing. All in all, I am pretty content with where I am on this piece.
