I had my solo critique with Coach Hall for this project today. It was a bit different than usual because I had several different unfinished versions to show him, rather than one complete work. We discussed why I made the decisions I did for each version and how I used what I learned to make the next one. Coach Hall encourages me to continue exploring the house image and contemplate how I could use physical drawings or paintings on the actual body to support my content. He especially like the versions in which I directly incorporated the text into the image. I had to crop the images because the background is so bland that it kind of takes away from any sense of drama or energy. Coach Hall and I discussed utilizing a different background to also communicate my content, similar to how I interacted with the swing set in that series. I want to continue exploring the idea of owning yourself. I would like to use both the pose and background to convey dynamism and create a formal composition. I am not going to worry about choosing any one of these versions to officially finish; rather I am going to post the above two images as reflections of my progress in developing this specific artistic narrative. I am thinking about still using my own body in the artwork, perhaps even with multiple versions and poses in the same image. My goal for the next project is to approach these problems with creativity and originality; I feel like the content of body and empowerment is almost banal at this point. Still, though, I feel especially drawn to this theme, so I want to try and make it as interesting as possible.
